Barcelona Faculty Member Annie Michie Receives Master Craftsman Award

We're proud of our faculty at each of our locations around the world, and we can’t help but get excited when they receive prestigious awards.

Annie Michie, professor of Art & Design at the IES Abroad Barcelona Center, was awarded a Diploma as Master Craftsman by the Catalan Government this past December. Michie’s life-long dedication to her career as an artist, maker, and artisan, as well as her sponsorship by three existing Diploma holders, qualified her for this honor.

“I’m thrilled at winning this award, as it comes from Catalonia’s government,” said Michie. “I have lived and worked as an artist, craftswoman, and professor in this country for three decades. I have tremendous respect for the high level of Arts & Crafts that this body represents. It’s wonderful to be part of this Arts & Crafts community.”

Michie was awarded the Diploma in the fields of embroidery and textile, along with the Divulgatiu or ‘Informative’ category, referring to her extensive curriculum exhibiting her own artworks, as well as for the promotion of Arts & Crafts by way of her teaching.

“Her passion transcends the classroom,” said Dr. Cesar Alegre Alsina, Center Director for the IES Abroad Barcelona Center. “What really makes her stand out is not only her award-winning artistic talent, but also her passion for teaching the students. Often you can see her in the professor’s lounge, evaluating and commenting on a student’s work and finding angles to help their creativity and talent flourish.”

Michie is a British artist based in Barcelona with a Masters of Fine Arts from London’s prestigious Goldsmiths University. She is in her sixth year as an IES Abroad Barcelona faculty member, a role she cherishes.

“I very much enjoy working with IES Abroad. It’s always a thrilling and stimulating experience to teach these young students, here in Barcelona, ahead of them starting their professional careers,” said Michie. “As a professor, I seek to widen their horizons in terms of teaching them of artists and art movements that are usually new to them, and taking them out of the classroom on excursions to art sites that they wouldn’t otherwise have found. I believe passionately in the importance of the creative arts, encouraging a student’s imagination and curiosity, and enabling them to approach their chosen field with a greatly enhanced skill and mindset.”
