Why You Shouldn’t Miss Milan Design Week

One of the biggest events you absolutely should not miss while living in Milan is Milan Design Week.

Milan Design Week consists of two major parts:

  • Fuorisalone, a city-wide series of events and installations,
  • and Salone del Mobile, a massive international trade fair focused on furniture and design.

Both usually take place for about a week in mid-April each year.

I personally didn’t get the chance to visit Salone del Mobile, but friends who went told me it was so enormous that it was impossible to fully explore in just one day. They also highly recommended it, especially because students can usually enter with discounted tickets.

Instead, I mainly explored Fuorisalone, and honestly, even that alone felt impossible to fully cover. More than 300 companies participated with exhibitions, pop-ups, and installations spread all across the city.

If you happen to be in Milan during this season, my biggest recommendation is this:

Do not schedule trips outside the city during Design Week.

Milan itself becomes the event.

Furniture brands, fashion companies, appliance brands, car companies, and many other businesses transform their stores or temporary spaces into immersive pop-up experiences created specifically for Design Week.

As you walk around the city, you’ll probably end up collecting:

  • free coffee
  • snacks
  • ice cream
  • product samples
  • tote bags
  • and all kinds of small gifts

But beyond the freebies, what impressed me most was the amount of effort companies put into creating memorable customer experiences.

As a business student, it was honestly fascinating to observe how brands used storytelling, space, design, and interaction to communicate their identity.

If you’re in Milan during Design Week, I strongly recommend planning ahead. The events are spread across the entire city, and there’s simply too much to see spontaneously.

I’d recommend choosing the companies or exhibitions you’re most interested in beforehand and organizing your route strategically.

Trust me — your feet will thank you later.
