A Weekend Along South Africa's Garden Route

Hey readers! Here in this blog I’m going to share with you some highlights from an incredible weekend I spent in Plettenberg Bay. If you’re studying abroad in Cape Town, I’d highly recommend you add Plett Bay to your bucket list. 

One of my favorite parts about studying abroad in Cape Town was realizing that the adventure didn't have to stop at the city limits. South Africa has so much to offer beyond Cape Town, and one of the best weekend trips I took was to Plettenberg Bay, a beautiful coastal town along the famous Garden Route. If you're studying abroad in Cape Town and looking for a weekend getaway, I highly encourage you to check out Plettenberg. 

Getting there was surprisingly easy. My friends and I took a bus from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay, and our hostel arranged a shuttle to pick us up once we arrived. Having transportation figured out ahead of time made the trip much less stressful, especially after several hours on the road. The hostel ended up being one of the highlights of the weekend. It was owned by a local woman who is also an environmental activist, and you could tell how much she cared about both the people staying there and the surrounding community. The property included a small farm that doubled as a rescue for stray dogs and cats, so there were always friendly animals wandering around looking for attention. It was impossible not to smile every time another dog came over to say hello. 

The hostel also accommodated vegan diets, which made meals easy for me, and every evening guests gathered around a fire pit to share stories. One of my favorite memories from the trip wasn't even during a hike or at the beach—it was sitting around that fire talking with people from all over the world. We met travelers from different parts of South Africa, as well as China, Brazil, the Netherlands, Mozambique, India, and several other countries. It reminded me that one of the best parts of traveling isn't just seeing new places—it's meeting people whose lives look completely different from your own. 

The next day, we headed to Robberg Nature Reserve, and it quickly became one of the most incredible hikes I've ever done. What amazed me most was how much the landscape changed over the course of a single trail. At one moment, we were walking across dry, sandy plateaus that almost felt like a desert. A little farther along, we found ourselves winding through forests before emerging onto beaches overlooking the Indian Ocean. Then came ancient caves, some dating back more than 20,000 years, where fossils and old bones can still be seen embedded in the rock. It felt like walking through multiple ecosystems in just a few hours. The coastline itself was unforgettable. Along the cliffs, we spotted dozens of Cape fur seals lounging on the rocks below and swimming through the waves. Every turn offered another incredible view of the ocean, and there were even places where hikers could stop for a swim if the conditions were right. It was one of those hikes where I kept stopping to take pictures, only to realize the next viewpoint was somehow even more beautiful. 

Beyond the coast, I also loved seeing more of South Africa's forests and farmland during the drive. After spending most of my semester in Cape Town, it was refreshing to experience a completely different side of the country. Rolling green hills, forests stretching into the distance, and peaceful farms made the Garden Route feel worlds away from city life. It reminded me just how geographically diverse South Africa really is. 

As incredible as the weekend was, it also taught me an important lesson about traveling while studying abroad: always expect the unexpected. Our trip back to Cape Town definitely tested our patience when our bus ended up being delayed by six hours. It wasn't exactly how we planned to spend the day, but experiences like that are part of traveling. Delays happen, transportation changes, and sometimes things don't go according to schedule. If I could give one piece of advice to future students planning weekend trips, it would be to stay organized. Book transportation and accommodations early, communicate with your hostel about pickup services, and leave a little flexibility in your schedule in case something unexpected comes up.

Looking back, Plettenberg Bay was much more than a weekend escape from classes. It gave me the chance to experience another side of South Africa, connect with people from around the world, and spend time in some of the most beautiful natural landscapes I've ever seen. Between the welcoming hostel, unforgettable conversations around the fire, incredible hiking, and constantly changing scenery, it became one of the most memorable weekends of my semester abroad. If you're studying in Cape Town and wondering whether the Garden Route is worth the trip, my answer is simple: start planning. Just don't forget to build a little extra time into your travel schedule, you never know what adventures (or bus delays) might come your way!
