About the Program

Length: Four weeks

We invite you to consider our IES Abroad Salamanca Center as a site for liberal arts and language cohorts. Nicknamed the “Oxford of the Spanish World,” Salamanca is home to Spain’s and one of Europe’s oldest universities, the Universidad de Salamanca (USAL). All courses and activities are designed to offer students an intensive Spanish-language program and a unique and fully immersive experience. Workshops include “Conversation Skills” as well as “Creative Writing & Speaking Skills.” This four-week program is meant to appeal to students who are interested in studying Spanish in a smaller European city.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee the availability of all housing, excursions, cultural events, guest lecturers or tours.

Academics

Academic Program includes:

One Faculty Director course (content TBD by the School, not transcripted through IES Abroad Registrar)
AND
One customized course (3-4 credits) chosen from the following IES Abroad Salamanca courses: LT/SP346, LT/SP344, LT/AH358, LT/WS331, SP110-SP410, SP342-SP442, SP471. SP303-403

Support & Administration

U.S.-Based Customized Program Manager (CPM) and Coordinator (CPC):

Will assist your students in planning and preparing for your program.

Chicago-Based Dean of Students Office and Crisis Management Team:

Available 24/7 in case of serious student emergencies.

Center-Based Staff (Program Manager/Coordinators):

Available 24/7 in case of emergencies. Will be your Center contact for the program and work closely with you to prepare and implement the program. Will accompany students on all IES Abroad-sponsored events.

CISI Insurance (Required):

This insurance covers IES Abroad students, faculty, and guests anywhere in the world during the specified program dates. Coverage includes doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, mental health treatment, and prescription drugs.

Transportation

Housing

Student Housing:

Students will be housed in residence halls, which include 17-21 meals per week excluding holidays. Kitchen facilities are available and internet is provided.

Program Leader (Faculty/Staff) Housing:

The program leader will be housed in a one-bedroom furnished apartment within walking distance of the IES Abroad Center. No meals are provided, but kitchen facilities are available.

Excursions

Site Visits Within City:

Program includes three integrated site visits that bring together academic focus with tourist interests. Examples include: Unamuno or Santa Teresa walking tour, Cathedral Tower, Ieronimus, and Museo Domus Artium.

Day Trips Outside of City:

Program includes one day trip out of the city that highlight the context of the immediate region. Examples include: Segovia or Zamora & Toro.

Field Trips Outside of City:

Program includes one built-in, local cohort excursion that may be linked thematically to courses with accommodations, meals, and activities included. Examples include: Portugal, Cantabria, or Andalucia.

Cultural Events:

Program includes three cultural events for the School’s students such as language exchange, recycling activities, bike rides, Spanish cooking class, and dance classes.
