LT/CU 461 - The Spanish Civil War in Literature, Theatre, Film, and Visual Culture

The Spanish Civil War has generated an unprecedented body of scholarship and artistic production in historiography, literature, cinema, and the visual arts, both within Spain and internationally. It remains one of the most significant subjects in the study of contemporary Spain. This course centers on literary works—primarily novels and drama—that have reinterpreted the Civil War since the end of the Franco dictatorship, examining how Spanish writers and intellectuals have revisited the conflict and its cultural legacy. Through both thematic and methodological approaches, students will critically examine a diverse corpus of texts that seek to interpret the conflict and its enduring impact on twentieth-century Spanish history, culture, and collective memory.
