About the Program

Length: Two weeks

Barcelona is singularly situated in one of the most compact, yet diverse, wine regions in the world. It is the ideal place to discover the unique path that takes wine from the vine to the glass to become a cultural icon and an important economic asset. This course takes a comprehensive and practical look at this process and the important factors that bring wine from field to table. Along the way, we will encounter environmental, scientific, sociological, historical, legal, economic, and practical issues that will explain, in part, the complex nature of the steps needed to assure that the various relevant enterprises have a reasonable chance of success.

Academics

Academic Program includes:

One IES Abroad-taught customized course - IB/CU 210 - The Business of Wine: from Vine to Glass - 3 credits
OR
One Faculty Director course (content TBD by the University, not transcripted through IES Abroad Registrar).

U.S.-Based Customized Program Manager (CPM) and Coordinator (CPC):

Will assist your students in planning and preparing for your program.

Chicago-Based Dean of Students Office and Crisis Management Team:

Available 24/7 in case of serious student emergencies.

Center-Based Staff (Program Manager/Coordinators):

Available 24/7 in case of emergencies. Will be your Center contact for the program and work closely with you to prepare and implement the program. Will accompany students on all IES Abroad-sponsored events.

CISI Insurance (Required):

This insurance covers IES Abroad students, faculty, and guests anywhere in the world during the specified program dates. Coverage includes doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, mental health treatment, and prescription drugs.

Orientation & Farewell

Orientation (Required):

Virtual and on-site orientations, including overview of the Center and the city, and comprehensive health and safety.

City Tour:

This guided tour will take students to all the major sites in Barcelona, including the Gothic Quarter.

Meals:

Enjoy two delicious meals (Welcome Dinner and Farewell Dinner) at Barcelona's most-loved restaurants to build sense of community and cohesion within the cohort.

Housing

Student Housing:

Students will be provided single-occupancy accommodation in a student residence hall located within a 30-minute commute of the IES Abroad Center via public transit. Residence hall accommodations come fully furnished and the property includes Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and towels, and common areas. No meals are provided, other than those indicated in the program schedule, but several restaurants, cafes, and eateries are nearby.

Excursions

Site Visits Within City:

This program will include four site visits and one business visit. These program components are subject to organization, company, or speaker availability and will be confirmed closer to the program starts. Examples include: wine shops, wine exhibitions, tapas cooking class, wine tastings.

Day Trips Outside of City:

Students will have one day trip outside of Barcelona, exploring a wine region. Examples include: a visit to wineries with very different commercial approaches in Alella.

Cultural Events:

Two cultural activities are included in the program:
1. Parc Güell – an enormous garden with stunning and distinct architectural elements designed by the renowned Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí.
2. Sagrada Familia – The Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's best-known work, has become an undisputed symbol of Barcelona. This unique mode.
