About the Program

Length: June - two weeks

We invite you to consider our IES Abroad Amsterdam Center as a site for welcoming your cohort for a Pre-law, Criminology, or Criminal Justice program. Courses and co-curricular activities are meant to maximize the location while expanding students’ perspectives more broadly to apply their experience in a globalized society. This program is meant to appeal to second, third and fourth year students who are interested in studying criminology, criminal law, or pre-law in a smaller European city. This program explores the Dutch criminal justice system, with a focus on crime, punishment, and the country’s distinctive approach to rehabilitation and reintegration. Through guest lectures, site visits to former correctional facilities, and guided discussions, students will critically compare the Dutch model with the U.S. system. Amsterdam and the Netherlands more broadly offer a compelling context for examining alternatives to punitive justice, including community-based sentencing, restorative justice practices, and progressive incarceration policies.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee the availability of all housing, excursions, cultural events, guest lecturers or tours.

Academics

Academic Program includes:

  • One School Faculty led course (content TBD by the University, not transcripted through IES Abroad Registrar) - given the length of the program this is the preferred option.
