About the Program

Length: Four weeks

We invite you to consider our IES Abroad Milan Center as a site for welcoming your four week program cohort. This immersive and innovative program offers academic rigor while uniquely showcasing the experiential potential of short-term study abroad by highlighting urban city design, regional travel, and a strong emphasis on engineering communication. This foundational program is geared towards first and second year Engineering students, with a particular appeal to Civil, Mechanical, Architectural, and Environmental majors. High caliber business visits and guest lectures with industry experts set the stage for a once in a lifetime experience.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee the availability of all housing, excursions, cultural events, guest lecturers or tours.

Academics

Academic Program includes:

One Faculty Director course (content TBD by the school, not transcripted by IES Abroad Registrar)
OR
IES Abroad Faculty Taught Course TBD with six hours of 'survival' Italian Language

Support & Administration

U.S.-Based Customized Program Manager (CPM) and Coordinator (CPC):

Will assist your students in planning and preparing for your program.

Chicago-Based Dean of Students Office and Crisis Management Team:

Available 24/7 in case of serious student emergencies.

Center-Based Staff (Program Manager/Coordinators):

Available 24/7 in case of emergencies. Will be your Center contact for the program and work closely with you to prepare and implement the program. Will accompany students on all IES Abroad-sponsored events.

Enhanced Health & Safety:

Additional predeparture orientations for the cohort prior to arrival on-site. Additional reflection time built into coursework and pre-/post-excursions.

Targeted Academic Student Support:

In addition to an assigned staff member who can address student issues, academic staff at the Milan Center will develop opportunities for specialized tutoring and student success skills building, similar to those that exist on U.S. university campuses.

CISI Insurance (Required):

This insurance covers IES Abroad students, faculty, and guests anywhere in the world during the specified program dates. Coverage includes doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, mental health treatment, and prescription drugs.

Site Visits Within City:

Program includes three integrated site visits that bring together academic focus with tourist interests. Examples include: Politecnico di Milano including a wind tunnel visit, an Urban Life Sustainability and Innovation guided tour, and a visit to the Milan Canals including a guided tour on the improved urban infrastructre and/or the Leonardo Da Vinci walking tour or tour of the Leonardo Da Vinci Musuem.

Day Trips Outside of City:

Program includes one day trip out of the city that highlights the context of the immediate region. Examples include: Bologna or Modena with visits to car companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini or Ducati, or Lake Como with visits to hydroelectric plants.

Field Trips Outside of City:

Program includes a two-night field trip to the Alps. This trip may include transportation, hotel accommodations, hiking, the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car, a visit to Forte di Bard, and two group meals.

Cultural Events:

The IES Abroad Center will arrange two cultural events for the School's students during the program. Events include: wine tasting, pasta making cooking class, athletic events, and film screenings.
