Carol Carmody, Senior Associate Vice President for International Partner Development, IES Global and founder of the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF), is a longtime leader in international education with more 35 years of experience expanding access to transformative global experiences. An IES Abroad alumna of both Vienna and Freiburg in 1985, Carol’s passion for Central Europe and intercultural understanding was inspired by her father’s WWII service and her academic focus on European history. Her study abroad experience deeply shaped her worldview and ignited a lifelong commitment to global learning. Throughout her career, she has advised both U.S. and international students, championed inclusion, and currently serves in a leadership role at IES Abroad, where she helps drive initiatives like the High-Impact Aid Commitment. For Carol, study abroad isn’t just a profession—it’s a way to help future generations connect with the world and each other.

“Study abroad matters deeply to me because it provided me with a view of this world that I was hoping to see...I studied history focusing on WWII Europe and the lead up to the dissolution of the USSR. Studying abroad through IES Abroad, both in Vienna and Freiburg, allowed me to live out my studies and my dreams. I experienced firsthand the remnants of WWII and the Russian influence on Central Europe through the people I engaged with and inspiring IES Abroad faculty such as Dr. Andrzej Bryk on loan from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Study abroad matters deeply to me because it gave me an opportunity to develop a worldview that honors my father and all he stood for in his life.”
