Barbara Bobrich was a passionate educator, world traveler, and steadfast believer in the transformative power of learning. Born and raised in Chicago by parents who championed curiosity and education beyond the classroom, Barbara became a first-generation college graduate from Northwestern University. She went on to dedicate 45 years to teaching high school biology in Park Ridge, Illinois, inspiring generations of students not only with her academic rigor but also with her infectious enthusiasm for the natural world.

A woman of many talents, Barbara also coached the Maine South Hawkettes dance team, choreographed school musicals, and spent her summers exploring the world with insatiable curiosity. She led with intellect, wit, and a deep love for life’s possibilities.

Barbara was introduced to IES Abroad in 2017 through the Study Abroad Film Festival. Moved by the student stories and the mission of global education, she became a generous supporter of scholarships that expand access to study abroad. Upon her passing in 2022, Barbara left a $600,000 bequest to IES Abroad, a significantly impactful gift to help students experience the world as she had.

To honor her legacy, IES Abroad established the Barbara Bobrich $5,000 Annual Scholarship, awarded each year to a student in financial need at the alma mater of the Film Festival’s Grand Prize winner. Through this gift, Barbara’s passion for discovery and equity in education lives on, empowering new generations to explore, learn, and grow far beyond the classroom.

“During her career Barbara inspired many to think beyond their own little world and look at the possibilities. She was an awesome woman, intelligent, witty and interested in so much that life had to offer.”
