In honor of the National Day of Spain, my friend and I decided to spend the day exploring somewhere outside of Barcelona. After hearing so much about Montserrat, one of the most iconic landmarks near the city, we figured it would be the perfect opportunity for a day trip. Known for its unique mountain formations, beautiful views, and historic monastery, Montserrat has been on our list of places to visit since arriving in Spain.
We started our morning by taking the R5 train from Barcelona toward Montserrat. The train runs approximately every hour, making it a relatively easy destination to reach without a car. By the time we arrived at the base of the mountain around noon, however, it was clear that we weren't the only ones who had decided to spend the holiday there. The area was packed with visitors, and the wait for the ride up the mountain was over an hour long. Rather than spend our afternoon waiting in line, we decided to hike up the mountain and save the ride for the way back down.
At first, we weren't entirely sure what we had gotten ourselves into, as we hadn’t done much research ahead of time. The hike was definitely more challenging than we had anticipated, requiring scaling some rock formations and lots of flights of stairs. There were several points where we had to stop to catch our breath, but every time we looked around, we were reminded why we had decided to hike in the first place.
The scenery was absolutely incredible. As we climbed higher, we were surrounded by unique rock formations, greenery, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. One of my favorite parts of the hike was being able to stop whenever we wanted to take pictures and appreciate the scenery. Unlike taking transportation straight to the top, hiking allowed us to experience the mountain from different perspectives along the way.
Another highlight was meeting other hikers throughout the afternoon. Everyone we encountered was incredibly friendly, whether they were offering encouragement as we climbed another set of stairs or simply stopping to chat. It was fun to see so many people from different places enjoying the same experience, and it made the challenging parts of the hike feel a little easier.
Finally reaching the top was incredibly rewarding. After all the climbing, we were excited to discover that there was much more to explore than just the mountain itself. The area had a dining hall, a museum, and several beautiful viewpoints overlooking the surrounding mountains. We spent some time walking around, taking pictures, and enjoying the views before eventually making our way back down by tram.
Although the hike was more difficult than expected, it ended up being one of my favorite activities so far. It was a great reminder that some of the best experiences come from changing your plans and embracing the unexpected. What started as a simple trip to see Montserrat turned into an afternoon of hiking, meeting new people, and appreciating the natural beauty just outside Barcelona. I would definitely recommend visiting Montserrat to anyone studying abroad in Barcelona, and if you're up for a challenge, hiking to the top makes the experience even more memorable!
