TH 394 - Theatre Workshop

This two‐week module will provide students with an introduction to contemporary theatre and theatre-creation in Ireland. There will be a strong emphasis on how contemporary Irish Playwrights have been inspired by ancient drama in a European Context, as well as the social and cultural history of Ireland. Students will examine the rich and dramatic history of Ireland through the lens of artistic expression, whilst also experiencing and analyzing the unique relationship between land and literature. Using a workshop format, the course will explore improvisational approaches and texts, culminating in a staged performance at the end of the two‐week period. The class sessions focus on the orchestration of meaning and experience for the spectator and performer, from conception through execution, with an eye toward the broader cultural implications of the actor’s work.
