Meet the Students – Their Words, Their Journeys

As a data science major, it is vital I get some experience before the real world beckons. The internship will be a wondrous experience to bridge my junior year to my senior year.

📍 Jason L. | Bloomsburg University of PA | Berlin Summer-Internship (Berlin International)

I believe that the invaluable experience of taking an internship abroad in Germany will align seamlessly with my academic and professional goals and provide an rare opportunity to apply and strengthen the cross-cultural communication skills I have acquired during my time as a student at Florida Gulf Coast University. Effective communication goes beyond borders and plays a crucial role in fostering understanding, and the city of Berlin (known for being a hub of diversity) offers the ideal environment for me to hone these skills. By working in a professional setting, I seek to both enhance my understanding of intercultural communication and also provide a unique perspective of my own as an international student. Ultimately, this semester abroad would be a pivotal step towards my long-term goals of contributing to impactful international communication and facilitating cross-cultural understanding and meaningful connection on a global scale.

Studying abroad holds immense potential for academic, cultural, and personal growth. My goals include academic enrichment through exposure to diverse perspectives, cultural immersion to foster understanding and empathy, language acquisition for effective communication, and professional development for global opportunities. IES Abroad scholarships and aid are integral in realizing these aspirations. Financial support alleviates the burden of expenses, enabling me to fully engage in my educational journey. To gain international business/internship experience. I also would like to learn more about my family's culture, seeing that I am mainly italian. My grandmother studied abroad and always wanted me to follow in her footsteps, so it has been my dream since I was a little kid and I'd be doing so in memorium of her.

📍Macie R. | University of Delaware | Rome Summer-Internship(Startalia)

I studied German for four years in high school and felt a very strong connection to the language and culture. I wanted to continue learning the language but wasn't able to due to schedule conflicts. However, it would be very special to me if I had the opportunity to experience the culture first hand after hearing so much about it in different lectures and stories. The first time I heard about the Brandenburg Gate was in seventh grade. At this time I was enthralled with Greek mythology and ever since, I’ve been hoping that I could one day see Nike in her chariot looking over the city. would be so thankful for the opportunity to explore the city of Berlin and learn more about the culture that my great grandparents experienced.

I believe that it is essential to the human experience to understand the ways other people approach the world. I am studying international relations to further my understanding of cultures other than my own, and I study philosophy to gain an understanding of different mindsets. I have always been passionate about traveling, because I believe the best way to learn about other people and their culture is to immerse myself amongst them,

📍Catherine A. | Seton Hall University | Vienna Summer-Internship

My goals for studying abroad are to experience cultures that differ from my upbringing in the United States, to gain independence in travel, and to explore personal and professional interests. I want to learn and grow in knowledge outside of my internship as well. I plan to take full advantage of my time abroad so that I can experience as much as possible on weekends and potentially in time staying after my internship. I also want to show myself that I am capable and brave. Being the first person in my family to travel outside of the country would be an amazing opportunity for growth.

Kate H. Milan SUmmer Internship

Interning abroad impacted my worldview because I now know how big and full of life the world is. I had left the country before interning abroad, but I had never spent so much time in Europe. I learned about the different cultures and the different ways of life, which I will never forget. Europe is so different from America, and in all honesty, it’s hard to put my experience into words. I traveled to many different places, skydived, saw amazing historical sites, met new friends, met foreign friends, and learned so much about myself. It truly was an experience I will never be able to explain just because it changed me so much and because it was so unique. I find myself having a hard time talking about my experience with friends and family because I don’t even know where to start. I experienced so many things and came back a more mature person.

Additionally, I often find myself hungry later at night and craving aperitivo! Some habits from Italy never left.
