Description: 

This course aims to give students a solid grounding in Modern French History as well as an understanding of the chronology, events, trends and themes running from the Renaissance to the fall of General De Gaulle. Though primarily a political, diplomatic and military history of France in the 19th and 20th centuries, the course will also address cultural, intellectual and socio-economic issues. We will also seek to investigate the distinctiveness of French History in order to determine its significance within European and World History.
