“Novice Abroad II” enables students to revise and deepen the basic knowledge of the French language and culture, with an emphasis on the systematic use of vocabulary and grammatical concepts through a communicative and direct approach, in order to meet their immediate and urgent everyday needs in various situations. The first four weeks will consist of an “accelerated” review of the basis seen in “Novice Abroad I”. Then, the rest of the semester, we will continue at a slower pace allowing everybody to fix and consolidate the learning outcomes. Students will be the main actors of their learning in concrete situations; they will take action and perform useful tasks of the daily life as well as more formal situations at school or work in a French speaking environment. In addition to the learning outcomes described in “Novice Abroad I”, the students will be able to interact in a more professional or working environment, as they will be entering the professional world soon. They will know how to describe a study or work project, participate in meetings, give precise instructions for a work to be done, write a users’ manual, etc.
The students’ efforts will be rewarded daily if they fully commit to actively participate and truly immerse themselves in the everyday life inside and outside the classroom, they can do this by taking notes of everything they see, not being afraid to speak in class, with their host family and with people in the community, be curious about their surroundings and ask questions.
Students entering this level must be able to fulfill the learning outcomes of the Novice Abroad level, as defined by the IES Abroad MAP for Language and Intercultural Communication. Specifically, they should already be able to express themselves on a variety of concrete, everyday topics and meet their basic needs in the language. By the end of the course, the successful student will develop a basic foundation in the five skills: intercultural communication, reading, writing, listening, and speaking to develop some communicative and cultural self-confidence necessary to attempt moderately complex tasks in the language, as described in the learning outcomes below.
