The Studio Rietveld course is a joint course between IES and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. The course is aimed at students who are interested in exploring the ideas and methodologies employed in the contemporary art practice. The Studio Rietveld course places a large emphasis on students implementing knowledge from their majors within the context and vocabulary of contemporary art.
Candidates for the course are students who already have art experience and, or, ambitious individuals who are interested in exploring and engaging in contemporary visual art. Inspiration will be drawn from the art school environment where the class will be taught and from excursions exploring some of the many galleries and museums in the city of Amsterdam. The class will follow the Gerrit Rietveld Academie teaching approach. This means that the emphasis is less on classical technique and more on developing a methodology which contributes to the ideas each student has chosen to work with. In this way the art practice is not an end point but a starting point. In order to achieve this, it is extremely important that students actively participate and discuss their work, and that they learn to critique each others work. Creative and critical thinking are highly important in this course.
We will be working with an online educational tool called Moodle. It is a priority that you as students make use of this tool, as there will be plenty of assignments posted and presented only via Moodle. Students will also attend lectures on art and will visit art galleries. These lectures and visits will increase awareness of visual art and design. Students are encouraged to visit additional museums and galleries and will receive a museum year card to facilitate these visits.
