Being polite is important to me while I am in Ecuador. Politeness is generally a good tactic, and as I am visibly a foreigner here, I don’t want to perpetuate stereotypes about rude Americans.

I was walking with (female, American) friends last weekend when we passed a club that is popular among University students. We had talked about possibly going dancing that night, so we stopped to ask the bouncer what the cover was.

In the opening scene of the movie "Real Steel," a robot designed by a character played by Hugh Jackman enters into a fight with a cow. I know this because the movie was showing in Spanish on a bus I took from the Ecuadorian city of Baños back to Quito last weekend.

I have now been in Quito, Ecuador for a week. It has been a whirlwind, with orientation, adapting to life in a new country, and introducing myself to new people—fellow American students, my host family and many Ecuadorians in a variety of capacities.
