I had set my alarm for 7:45am, having been informed that the painters would arrive at eight and I’d need to be out of bed. The renovation of my old bedroom marches along with no regard for which country I am in and during these few, fleeting days at home I’m forced to accommodate it.

            I move out of my homestay in four days. Amid the madness of studying for finals, submitting my last written assignments, and preparing to travel Italy for two weeks, I’m glad to have found some time to reflect.

The wifi in my homestay hasn’t been working, so on Sunday I went to a local café to work on one of my final essays. Exams start this week and all of a sudden I have a million assignments, so I’ve had to find places to work other than my bedroom, where there is no longer functioning internet.

Croatia is the most beautiful country I’ve ever visited. Our three days there were a blur of palm trees and waterfalls, punctuated by street sandwiches (which all had corn on them, for some reason) and blue Fanta.

The ocean water sparkled behind a long concrete dock and the chain link fence that guarded it. Red-roofed houses dotted the hillside, protruding from the greenery as if they had sprouted from the ground. Colorful mopeds zipped along the narrow street.
