Miami University
Christchurch Direct Enrollment - University Of Canterbury

am a sophomore at Miami University in Ohio. I major in nutrition and have a concentration in Dietetics. "Home" is wherever I feel happy, and for that I find my home in many places. After undergrad I plan on taking part in a Dietetic Intership that will last about a year and then take the RD exam to become a Registered Dietitian. I am apart of the Miami tribe, and hope to give back and work with the tribe after I become a Registered Dietitian. I am hoping that my experience in New Zealand will help lead me to better understand how culture plays a role in people's health and diet. The Maori tribe plays a crucial role in being able to research and compare the different revitalization efforts from the Miami tribe.

So it's been a month since my beautiful days in the beautiful country of New Zealand. I find myself calling and texting my program friends that I made, and catching up on the little ins and outs of their everyday lives back in the States.

Before I came to New Zealand I thought I’d spend my time being 100% immersed in Kiwi culture. However, that ended up not being the case at all. Ilam apartments consist of multiple cultures from all over the world and are a common place for international students to live.

If there were one spot that I could always find peace and relax, it would be on the bench that overlooks the ocean on a cliff at Taylor’s Mistake in Sumner. The Port Hills twist and curve throughout the landscape and I can see for miles out into the big refreshing clear turquoise blue water.

I couldn’t have chosen a better possible place than the beautiful Queenstown, New Zealand to spend my 21st birthday. The travel was long but the scenery was beautiful along the way.

Ever since our first meeting, the IES abroad students have become closer and closer throughout our stay. This past week our group went on our weeklong field trip to Rarotonga on the Cook Islands.

As a member of the Myaamia Native American tribe back in Oxford Ohio, living in a bicultural society has taught me heaps about what it’s like for an indigenous culture to be respected and treated equally.

The moment I found out that I was accepted into the Christchurch program, I felt stressed but extremely excited to embark on such an amazing journey. The process to arrive in New Zealand wasn't easy, but was worth every second of it.
