Sydney Direct Enrollment - University Of Sydney

My name is Brea Baker and I'm a junior at Yale University (Boola Boola!). I'm obsessed with all things related to travel, sushi, Beyonce, activism and Scandal. Freshman year I was bitten by the travel bug and I've been traveling ever since. Follow me on the next journey of my life to the great outback, Australia, where I hope to find nemo, pick up an Australian accent, and become a world class surfer.

The last thing to mark off on things to do in Sydney was definitely the bridge climb. I wasn’t sure I would find the time to do it but my friend and her mom had planned to do it together and her mom got scared last minute and offered me her ticket. How could I say no?! It was AWESOME.

I’m writing this cuddled next to my mother, eating Americanized Chinese food, and watching Scandal! It feels so good and I’m so glad to be back with my family and friends. But I miss Sydney SO much already. There are the superficial things I miss such as the weather and beaches.

In the spirit of continuing with my bucket list of things to do before I leave Australia, I finally went INSIDE the Sydney Opera House for the ballet, La Bayadere (The Temple Dancer in french).

In my quest to fit in as much as possible into my last week here in Sydney, I went to see Wicked at Capitol Theatre. For those who are unfamiliar (you should be ashamed of yourself), Wicked is the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and ultimately the back story of The Wizard of Oz.

As our time here in Sydney winds down, I have been trying to jam in as many awesome activities and memories as possible. This led to my friend Jenn and I discovering GHOST TOURS!

I was concerned about Halloween not being a normal part of Aussie culture so I was quite surprised when a friend told me about a Full moon/Halloween party hosted on Magnetic Island which is an island off the coast of Townsville, Queensland.

One day sunday is this awesome block party hosted on the last sunday of every month in Marrickville, a town about 5 minutes away from Newtown where Sydney University is located. It’s filled with awesome graffiti, cool people, great food, and an awesome DJ.

This past weekend my friend Jenn and I decided to see a little more of Australia and off to Melbourne we went! Things I love about Melbourne:

Last weekend I went to Surf Camp! Its a trip sponsored by the University of Sydney. We drove about 3.5 hours out of Sydney, to where camp would take place. It included hostel stay, surfing lessons, board and wet suit, meals and overall fun!

Santa Clause must have come early because I just got back from my second spring break of 2014! Yes, you read that correctly. Spring break for us Americans is a week or two in March or April and because the seasons are reversed for the Aussies it’s now spring time again. Yay me!

I was talking with a friend who is from Germany and here on a working holiday visa. Her year is almost over and so I asked if she planned on staying for longer. She said that she had indeed planned on staying as she had fallen in love with Australia and was contacting farms already.

I had the pleasure of going to the horse races recently and what an experience that was. Let me preface this post by saying that I have never been to a horse race nor have I known anyone (as far as I know) who has. So when my friend invited me, I had no idea what to expect.

My friend Jenn found this really awesome app that has “cultural tours” around Sydney. You choose a tour, it gives you a starting point, and you follow the app around Sydney almost like a scavenger hunt.

Hunter Valley is Australia’s wine country (similar to California’s Napa Valley). Thanks to the amazingness that is Groupon, friends and I were able to take a tour of 5 wineries in Hunter Valley for about $60!

As a New Yorker, I am no stranger to a city filled with people of all walks of life. I would liken Sydney to New York in that aspect. Similar to America there is no typical “Australian”. You have people from every Asian country imaginable.

This weekend we had another awesome IES sponsored trip. This time we went to Royal National Park.

Warning: the images you are about to see are mind blowing. They may cause new psychological behaviors such as wanting to book the next flight to Sydney or writing letters to Santa Claus for a trip to Australia for Christmas.

(Warning: lengthy post ahead; scroll to bottom for a TL;DR – too long didn’t read) My first week here in Sydney has been such a jam packed week full of awesome events and outings planned by the IES Abroad team to get us acquainted with Sydney.

So it’s T-2 hours until my flight and I’m seated anxiously near my gate waiting for boarding. I figured this would be the perfect time to reflect and share my thoughts. After spending my entire summer in Botswana, it was hard to say goodbye to family and friends for four whole months.
