The safety of IES Abroad students is our highest priority. Our staff is well-trained and knowledgeable about our safety procedures and protocols. Unlike most study abroad providers, IES Abroad has a full-time Chicago-based Dean of Students Office, that establishes and oversees our health and safety guidelines, and consults with the IES Abroad Centers to maintain high standards of safety.

All IES Abroad Centers have plans for evacuating students to safety during emergencies. IES Abroad staff overseas discuss our extensive and thorough student safety guidelines with students during their arrival orientation, and again later, should the need arise.

Every Center has enforced security systems, and local staff have developed close relationships with local police. The Centers receive regular updates from the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate regarding U.S. citizen safety.

In general, IES Abroad Centers are not located near other American programs. We are usually on or close to university campuses. In most of our programs IES Abroad students live with local residents, in homestays or in apartments with local students. Generally, IES Abroad students are not readily distinguishable from local students.

Finally, IES Abroad requires that all IES Abroad students have international health insurance that is vetted by IES Abroad so they are adequately covered while overseas.
