Advising & Support

Even though you’re directly enrolling in one of our partner universities, we’ll be there for you whenever you need us.

Advising
Choosing and directly enrolling in courses abroad can be confusing and overwhelming. This is why we offer you predeparture advising that’s specific to your needs. Our goal is to provide support and guidance throughout your application and enrollment process.

But our advising services don’t stop there. While you’re in Shanghai, our staff is available to help you transition into your new home.

Support
The support services we offer IES Abroad direct enrollment students are specifically designed to help you achieve your study abroad goals as effectively and smoothly as possible. We know studying abroad is an adventure, and, at times, you may need help or just someone to talk to—that’s why our staff is there for you.

On-Site Staff
Whether you have questions about academic requirements, housing, or well-being and safety, our Shanghai-based IES Abroad staff is available to support you. Because of our close relationship with the universities in Shanghai, IES Abroad is also able to offer you unique academic, social, and cultural opportunities. Our staff in Shanghai accompanies you throughout orientation, as well as at the IES Abroad field trips and cultural events.

Field Trips & Events

Even though your adventure starts in Shanghai, our field trips and course-related trips take you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of your host country. Here are a few possible destinations.

Wuzhen
1 Day | Summer
Experience the rich history of China through Wuzhen's ancient (and extensive) stone bridge and canal network.

Hong Kong or Tokyo
1 Week | Summer
At the conclusion of your programming in Shanghai, you will go on a one-week course-related trip to either Hong Kong or Tokyo. This trip adds an important comparative aspect to learning about business in China versus business in the Asian region as a whole.

NOTE: IES Abroad field trip destinations, activities, and lengths of stay may vary according to term and availability.

Daily Life

Part of making you feel at home in Shanghai is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, housing that is well-located and comfortable, or field trips that take you off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

IES Abroad Orientation
Upon arrival in Shanghai, you participate in a 1-day introductory orientation with the IES Abroad Shanghai staff. Designed specifically for direct enrollment students, the IES Abroad orientation program introduces you to your program, your fellow students, and to Shanghai.

Other highlights may include visits to celebrated sites in Shanghai and cultural activities.

University Orientation
You also attend ACEM's orientation, where you get acquainted with the logistics of student life and explore the historic SJTU Xuhui campus.

Housing

We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Shanghai, it will feel like home.

As part of our direct enrollment services, we offer well-located, comfortable housing for all students because securing housing independently can be challenging. IES Abroad’s housing options meet our safety and security standards.

Student Residence Hotels - You will live in a shared room at a 3-star residence hotel on the downtown SJTU-Xuhui campus. The hotel is a 15-minute walk to your classes at Antai. Your room will have a TV, air conditioning, WiFi & ethernet internet access, hair dryer, daily room cleaning service, desks, etc. There is no kitchen access in this housing option, however a light breakfast, lunch, and coffee breaks will be provided Monday through Friday. Your roommate will be a fellow program participant.

Redefine the way you live and learn in Shanghai through our cultural events, such as:

  • City exploration and guided tour
  • Tea tasting
