Sammie Stagg in Santiago

I'm from small-town Minnesota and in my third year at Grinnell College, where I'm independently majoring in Health Science Writing. I enjoy drinking tea, cooking, swing dancing and signing ASL. I also read a lot of books and entertain myself with little things like research projects and scavenger hunts. I chose to study abroad in Santiago, Chile - a city of over 5 million - because my top two priorities were (1) to live someplace I could speak Spanish all the time, and (2) to live in a way that's significantly different from what I already know.

Favorite thing about going abroad?
I’m excited for all the ways I’m going to grow from being abroad. Through living in a world 5,000 miles from home, interning at a social justice organization, making Spanish my primary lens, and relying on my new connections to help me navigate, I’m going to grow so much. Of course I’m excited for the collection of experiences I’ll have, big and small, but more than that I’m excited for how those experiences will allow me to grow. I can’t wait for the day when I come home and realize I’m an entirely changed person-- stronger, more independent, more aware of life outside my home bubble-- all because of my time in Chile.
