  • Sophomore, junior, or senior standing when program begins - some local university courses may not be available to sophomores

A student visa is required to enter Spain. Upon admission, you will receive more information about the application process and any related fees. The visa application process for non-U.S. citizens can be extremely lengthy, please contact us for more information. If you're studying with IES Abroad in Spain, you may be eligible to use the IES Abroad ACCeSS program. ACCeSS is our visa processing service in which we submit your visa application and supporting documents to the consulate for you.

  • Audition CD
    An audition by means of CD or mini disk. Students looking to focus on composition must also submit sample scores of their strongest work. When creating the audition CD, students should:
    • Highlight their best work - work that shows the depth of their abilities, rather than a timeline of their progression
    • Include relevant ensemble pieces, but clearly explain, in writing if necessary, which instrument they play in the piece highlighted
    • Be professional - type-up the song list, and/or any explanation they wish to include about the pieces
    • Understand that there is no perfect way to go about producing this CD (i.e., there is no standard number of songs, nor required type of songs/music). The school is looking to see how students choose to present themselves, the type of work they select, their playing style, the quality, etc.

  • Academic Statement of Purpose
    This statement should: State your instrument(s) and department of focus: jazz or classical. Explain your past music study, what you plan to accomplish while studying at CvA, and future music goals. You do not need to specifically list all studies and performances to date, but should provide a general overview of your academic and music background. Be as specific as possible about the courses and instruction you wish to take at CvA. Mention previous study, work, or experiences overseas if any. Write your name at the top of the statement.

  • IES Abroad will contact you as soon as we receive an admissions decision from the CvA . We are not provided updates on the timeline nor on the progress of application review.
  • Typically, applicants to this program have a backup program in mind, as admission to the CvA program is very competitive. Please contact your IES Advisor for advice on suitable alternative programs.
  • Please be sure to send all physical application materials to the IES Abroad Chicago office at 33 West Monroe Street, Suite 2300, Chicago, IL 60603. Do NOT send these materials directly to the CvA.

  • Portfolio
    An art portfolio is a small, representative collection of an artist's current or recent work. The art portfolio plays an important role in the GRA admission review process by identifying the skills, abilities, and potential of the student. The artist should submit the best, most recent work that represents his or her personal interests and abilities. It should reflect the individual's unique art background, experience, and abilities in the arts to date. See requirements below.

    • The portfolio must contain between 20-30 pieces of visual work, no more than three years old. Initial sketches, ideas and plans can also be included to provide insight into your work process. Types of work you can send: drawings, sketches, design sketches, sketch books, paintings, photographs, collages, graphics, textiles, garments, ceramics, items of jewelry, floor plans, models and texts if applicable.
    • Please submit electronic copies of your work in one PDF file no larger than 50 mb (Tip: put a pencil next to your work to add scale to the photo).
    • It is also possible to submit a link to an online portfolio instead of or in addition to a PDF file. However, we recommend submitting a PDF file because links do not always work.
    • Make sure to include a table of contents and an explanation of the work in your portfolio, including a numerical list of artwork descriptions that correspond with the images. Information such as title, size, media, assignment or theme, if any, and any exhibition/awards may be included.
  • Academic Statement of Purpose
    Make sure to include the following in your statement:
    • The department at GRA you are applying for: Ceramics, Fine Arts, Glass, Photography, VAV, Architectural Design, Fashion, Graphic Design, Jewelry, or Textile
    • Your reasons for choosing the Gerrit Rietveld Academie
    • Your expectations of the program
    • Your future plans
    • Your development so far
    • Your interests (i.e. museums, film, music, dance, theatre, collecting, philosophy, etc.)
  • Resume
    Please include past study, personal interests, and other activities.
  • Passport-Quality Headshot Photo
    Submit one passport photo. This photo must be 2 inches by 2 inches and have a completely white background with nothing else in the photo but your head and shoulders.
  • Color copy of valid passport photo page (must be valid for six months past the end date of your IES Abroad program)

  • Extracurricular Activities Form
    You will be asked a few short questions about your extracurricular activities.
  • Statement of Motivation
    Write a short statement (300 words or less) that answers the following questions:
    - What or who is your muse?
    - What is important in your life?
    - Why would you be a good fit for the program?
  • Portfolio Video
    Record a 1 minute "moving selfie" in the room/space where you make your work as you discuss one of your pieces.
  • Optional but encouraged: A Brief DVD or Video (preferably in an internationally-compatible format)
    This replaces the required face-to-face interview required of all other applicants. Students should take this opportunity to briefly and creatively introduce themselves (1-2 minutes ONLY), highlighting their personality and giving any information that is not already in the portfolio, resume or statement of purpose.

Please visit the UvA website to view a tentative list of courses offered at UvA through the Undergraduate Certificate Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences.  You may take courses in any of these clusters.  Note that you are only listing preliminary course choices on this statement; course offerings are subject to change.  Master's level courses are not open to IES Abroad students.  Please give a brief explanation of your current studies to provide a general overview of your academic background (but don't specifically list all classes taken to date).  Also, mention previous study, volunteer, or work experiences overseas, if any.     Although there is no length requirement, the essay must address your GPA, any particular academic challenges faced, reasons you chose this IES Abroad program, and how it fits into your academic career.
     
Passport & Visa Requirements:

A passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the end date of the program, with at least two blank pages is required. Visit travel.state.gov to locate U.S. passport agencies in your area.

U.S. citizens in possession of a valid passport do not need to obtain a visa to enter or study in the Netherlands. Non-U.S. citizens may be required to obtain a student visa prior to arrival. Please contact us for more information.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • 18 years of age
  • In good standing at your home school
  • 2.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale (GPAs under 2.5 will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • 4 semesters of college-level French or the equivalent
  • Enrolled in a French course within the year prior to the program start date
  • Graduate students and continuing education students encouraged to apply

    Applications may be considered after the published deadline on a space available basis. Please note that late applicants may be required to submit a non-refundable confirmation deposit upon acceptance in order to secure a place in the program. Submit the following in your MyIESabroad account after your Online Application is processed:

  • Home School Authorization
    Your on-campus study abroad advisor will instruct you on approval for this program.
  • Official Transcript(s) for each college/university you have attended since high school.
