University of Colorado, Boulder – Academic Program Application Requirements

- Junior or senior standing when program begins
- Final admissions decision rests with University of Colorado, Boulder.
- Applicants whose GPAs are below 2.5 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis (additional application materials below are required)
- For candidates required to provide evidence of language proficiency the following are accepted:
- TOEFL iBT: 75 (engineering Courses: 83)
- IELTS: 6.5
- Completion of Advanced 2 and a GPA of 3.0 or grade B- in the University of Colorado, Boulder, English language pathway program.
Proof of Language Proficiency
Most academic programs require evidence of your language proficiency for place allocation. This might be an internationally recognized TOEFL or IELTS certificate, or it might be an online placement proficiency test. Each university and program has different requirements, so talk to your program coordinator for details.
If you are enrolling in a language program, you do not need proof of your language proficiency, but it can be useful to facilitate course placement if you would like to include one in your application.
Proof of Deposit
You must submit your deposit confirmation form before you apply to the university.
Your proof of deposit checklist:
- Make sure the information in the document is in English, lists Study Abroad Foundation as the recipient, you or your sponsor’s name as the sender, and the amount you have paid in the local currency of your Host Country
- Don’t confuse your proof of deposit with your certificate of deposit (bank statement)
SAF Program Agreement
SAF requires the program agreement to confirm you agree to SAF policy and are ready to continue the application process. This is an electronic Forms Builder DocuSign form.
Your program agreement checklist:
Complete the student information section
- Include your correct passport number
- Add all identifying information, including SAF location and date of birth which will confirm you will be 18 years old at the start of the program
- Check your address is correct (you can use your home or school address)
- Add the term and year in the correct format for the SAF program you are applying to
- Complete the correct form in English (the “reference” application agreement pages are to guide you in your application and are not the official document. If you submit anything but the official form, your SAF program coordinator will ask you to resubmit without the reference application pages)
- Sign and date the form
- Use the digital signature or your native characters
- Make all the text visible
Medical Information Form
The medical information form details any medical conditions SAF or the university needs to accommodate during your time abroad.
Academic Recommendation
You may need to complete an academic recommendation when you apply for your study abroad program, so the university admissions department can understand who you are, what your work ethic is, and how you approach classroom learning.
Your academic recommendation checklist:
- Sign the authorization and release section
- Write your program’s correct hosting institution and term on the document
- Ensure you have completed every section
- If your recommendation requires your recommender to rank your skills, ensure that you have been ranked above 5. If you have a lower ranking than 5 for any of the skills, there may be a delay in your application.Check “Yes” for both boxes
Your recommender must complete the information at the bottom of the page and sign their name. If you cannot complete the Academic Recommendation form, you can use the following alternates:
- University letter from the dean or a professor, including information about how long they’ve known you, what your work and engagement in class is like
- For language programs only: academic recommendation Japanese university form
Affidavit of Support
The affidavit of support goes alongside your bank statement to clarify your financial information for the US university.
Your affidavit of support checklist:
- Ensure the correct program and host university name is on the document
- List the start and end month and year of the study abroad program. This can be found on the SAF website
- List the sponsored currency amount
- Confirm the sponsored amount on the affidavit matches the amount on the bank statement match. If the affidavit amount is higher than the bank statement, correct it to match the bank statement
- If you are self-supporting, be sure to sign the affidavit
- If you are not financially supporting yourself you must:
- List the relationship of your supporter (i.e. mother, father, uncle, grandmother
- Check your sponsor’s name is written in English and matches the bank statement
- Ensure your sponsor has signed the document
Certificate of Deposit (bank statement)
The Certificate of Deposit is a one-page bank statement to show SAF and US universities you have sufficient funds to pay for study abroad, support yourself, and meet the visa requirement.
Your bank statement and affidavit of support checklist:
- Check the bank statement is less than three months old (if it is older than three months, it will be rejected)
- Check the name on the bank statement is in English and matches your name or your sponsor’s name listed on the Affidavit of Support form
- Check your sponsorship amount meets the minimum needed for your host university in the currency of your host country. You can provide multiple bank statements—and their affidavit of support documents—to equal the correct amount for your host institution
- Confirm the bank statement has a bank stamp and/or the bank-manager’s signature
Course Preference Form
Use your course preference form to tell the university which classes you would like to take during your study abroad program.
Headshot Photo
Include a formal passport-style photo. Some universities use the photo for your student ID, and SAF uses it to identify students.
High School Transcript
If you are applying to your study abroad program in your freshman year and cannot provide a college transcript, you must submit your high school transcript. It details your academic qualifications so your chosen university can determine if you are capable of the workload and academic rigors of its programs.
You must upload an English language copy of your high school transcript. A native language copy is not required.
Your high school transcript must include your GPA and an official seal.
Home University Transcript (English)

Housing Preference Forms (and descriptions)
The housing preference form helps your SAF program coordinator to organize housing that best suits you. Select the housing type that applies to your program and complete the questionnaire honestly and truthfully.
Immunizations
Depending on your program, you may be required to provide proof of your vaccinations and submit test results. Each country and university has its own requirements.
Your immunization checklist:
- Ensure all immunization forms are signed and dated by a medical doctor or your healthcare provider
SAF Transcript Release
The transcript release form gives SAF permission to order your transcript after you finish your study abroad program. Make sure that your correct program information is written on this form, and you have signed and dated it before submitting.
Passport Copy
Both SAF and the university will need a copy of your passport in order to validate your information and identity. Passport applications and renewals can take some time, so avoid last-minute stress by ensuring you have a valid passport.
Your passport checklist:
- Have a passport
- Ensure your passport is valid until at least six months after your study abroad program ends
- Upload a clear scan of your passport to your SAF portal
