Location
Just a short walk or five-minute tram ride from the city centre, the University of Melbourne is near the heart of Melbourne. The University has a large, beautiful, urban campus in Parkville.
While adding study abroad to your resume is impressive enough, adding an international internship experience is even more powerful, and can help you distinguish your application for graduate school or a job opportunity in today’s competitive job market.
An internship provides an invaluable cultural experience, and helps you develop professional and personal skills. If you’re of junior or senior standing at your home university, you’re eligible to apply. All IES Abroad internships are offered as academic options earning IES Abroad credit. All internships at the University of Melbourne are unpaid and revolve around the completion of a defined project over a period of up to 16 weeks.
Internship placements are quite competitive and may require early application. The placements are very demanding academically; some have been deemed the equivalent of two subjects (8 credits), as they require a much greater workload than the average subject. If you are interested in applying for an internship, be sure to contact your IES Abroad representative early.
Placement Examples
Business & Management - You will be assigned to a Practicum organization. Working in teams, you will undertake a host-specified business project of strategic importance and produce and present a professional standard report proposing recommendations.
Humanities & Social Sciences – Offered through the Faculty of Art, all internship programs require you to participate in industry-based placements, as well as completing a significant research project under the supervision of an appropriate academic staff member from the respective department.
Current internship programs include:
Uni-capitol Washington internship
Media & Communication internship
Criminology internship
Parliamentary – You will work with Member of Parliament in the settings of Parliament, the Parliamentary library, Parliamentary offices, and electorate offices.
Public Affairs – You will work with local government, non-government and community-based organizations that have a public affairs focus or interest. You will have active experience working for a senior person with a policy making and management role.
Science – Positions are available in a number of possible fields and organizations.
Sociology – Have the chance to undertake a serious sociological research project based on your placement with one of a wide variety of organizations.
To complement your coursework and help you better understand the Aussie culture and society, a field study component is available with several courses in the Faculty of Science.
Courses may change each semester, but some that have had field components in the past are The Earth, Atmosphere, and Ocean; Plant Biodiversity; Australian Wildlife Biology; and Applied Ecology.
See the University's Handbook to find courses with a field component.
Even though you’re directly enrolling in one of our partner universities, there’s something IES Abroad wants you to know: we’re here for you if you need us.
Advising
Choosing and directly enrolling in courses abroad can be confusing and overwhelming. This is why we offer you predeparture advising that’s specific to your needs. Our goal is to provide support and guidance throughout your application and enrollment process.
But our advising services don’t stop there. While you’re in Melbourne, our staff is available to help you transition into your new home.
Support
The support services we offer IES Abroad direct enrollment students are specifically designed to help you achieve your study abroad goals as effectively and smoothly as possible. We know studying abroad is an adventure, and, at times, you may need help or just someone to talk to—that’s why our staff will be there for you.
On-Site Staff
Whether you have questions about academic requirements, housing, or well-being and safety, our Melbourne-based IES Abroad staff is available to fully support you. Because of our close relationship with the universities in Melbourne, IES Abroad is also able to offer you unique academic, social, and cultural opportunities. Our staff in Melbourne will accompany you throughout orientation, as well as at the IES Abroad field trips and cultural events.
Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Melbourne, it will feel like home.
As part of IES Abroad’s direct enrollment services, we offer well-located, comfortable housing for all students because securing housing independently can be challenging. IES Abroad’s housing options meet our safety and security standards.
Student Apartments – You share a fully-furnished apartment, typically with an Australian student. All apartments include a bedroom area with two beds, a bathroom, study area, and kitchenette with microwave, stove-top, and refrigerator. Meal plans are not provided in the apartments. Located just a short walk from campus, the student apartments provide creative programs, activities, and events that are designed to enhance the quality of residential life. Internet access is also available in the student computer labs around campus.
Residential Colleges – Twelve undergraduate residential colleges are affiliated with the University of Melbourne. Colleges have furnished single or double study/bedroom accommodations, provide three meals a day, and have shared bathroom facilities.
Residential colleges typically also include a dining hall, student lounges, computer rooms, a library, and sports facilities. The colleges are situated within a five to15 minute walk from the University of Melbourne’s main campus in one of the nicest areas of the city. Space is very competitive in residential colleges, but IES Abroad has successfully placed numerous students in the past. A supplemental fee applies to cover the cost of the meal plan.
Part of making you feel at home in Melbourne is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, housing that is well-located and comfortable, or field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.
IES Abroad Orientation
The program commences with a two-day, IES Abroad-organized trip to either one of the seaside towns along The Great Ocean Road or to one of Victoria’s major national parks. This trip gives you the chance to get to know your fellow students, meet our Melbourne staff, and prepare you for your upcoming academic experience in Melbourne. Past highlights of the IES Abroad orientation have also included surfing lessons, rock climbing, wildlife experiences, bushwalking, attending an Australian Rules football or cricket match, and a winery tour.
Additionally, Core™, IES Abroad’s Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry Experience, begins during orientation and continues throughout the semester with activities focusing on academic and cultural adjustment, goal achievement, and preparing for the return home.
University Orientation
The official university academic orientation that introduces you to the University of Melbourne’s facilities and offerings follows the IES Abroad orientation. You finalize your course registration, open your email account, participate in numerous academic, social and cultural events, and get to know the campus and your fellow students.
University Clubs & Events
While you’re in Melbourne, joining a social or sports club is a great way to meet local students. As an IES Abroad student at the University, you will have access to its extensive sports facilities that cater to 50 athletic clubs. The IES Abroad program fee also includes membership to the Student Union, which offers cultural events, activities, and more than 100 clubs and societies.
The University routinely hosts cultural events, guest lecturers, and optional field trips at reasonable prices to other parts of Australia such as the Great Ocean Road, the Blue Mountains, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Outback.
Although your adventure begins in Melbourne, our field trip to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef provides contrast and context for what you are learning in Melbourne. You share a portion of the cost with IES Abroad.
Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef (NEW in Fall 2013!)
5-6 Days
The Melbourne mid-semester trip takes students to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. One day of the field trip will be spent at sea on a privately chartered motor cruiser. Onboard instructors explain the spectacular ecosystem of the reef, which you explore while snorkeling. Hike through the ancient Daintree rainforest with an aboriginal tracker and zip line through the eldest rainforest in the world.
