India, the home of one of the world's most ancient civilizations, has forged and maintained a sense of national unity in a country unique for its religious, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity. In the last decade, the Indian economy has taken off and the country has come to play an increasingly important role in the world economy.
With its new economic strength and technological know-how, India is also an increasingly important player on the world stage. The Indian film industry, for example, centered in Mumbai, has come to rival Hollywood as an exporter of films.
