This class is designed for students with four semesters of Japanese or equivalent. Students are expected to have a solid background in basic grammar, basic speaking/listening comprehension; reading and writing ability in hiragana, katakana, and approximately 400 kanji in context. In this course, the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are considered to be of equal importance. Our goal is for students to further develop communication skills in these four language areas.

Additional requirements:
In addition to conventional language classes, students are required to attend at least two Japanese cultural learning seminars, which consist of a lecture, accompanied by a field study trip.
Attendance policy:
Daily attendance is mandatory at all IES Tokyo courses. Exceptions will only be made for documented illness or emergencies.

1st period 08:45 – 10:15

More effectively use basic grammar, including the use of keigo
Master new grammatical items, demonstrating advancement advance beyond the student’s current level of Japanese
Utilize new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions
Identify differences between spoken and written Japanese
Speaking
Incorporate conversation strategies to improve daily communication
Express ideas and opinions
Use different registers (i.e. formal speech vs. casual speech) according to the given context
Incorporate more conjunctions and transitional devices to speak longer,
Listening
Understand everyday conversation in both formal and casual speech registers
Reading
Read slightly long and complicated materials closely
Practice scanning (to extract specific information) and skimming (to get the gist) of text that contain unknown words and kanji
Writing
Write summaries, short response papers and speech in several paragraphs
Utilize more conjunctions and transitional devices for coherent text production
Use the written language effectively

Before each grammar items are introduced, read the explanations in the textbook.
By the time dialogues and reading materials are covered in class, memorize new vocabulary items.
Grading Scale
According to the IES Abroad grading policy which applies to all IES centers, the assessment of courses is based on the following letter grades. Letter grades can be expressed with a plus or minus sign for numerical grades that fall within a range between letter grade assignments. The plus sign is not used with A grades and both the plus and minus signs are not used with D and F grades. Grade

B: 80 - 89 Good Performance
C: 70 - 79 Adequate performance
D: 60 - 69 Unsatisfactory performance and/or comprehension of the subject matter
