Description: 

This course assumes that the student can recognize basic grammatical structures covered in Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya, part 1, third edition and is able to conduct a conversation in Arabic in situations like hotel reservations, buying a ticket at the train station, and inquiring about flights at the airport etc.

The course is designed to enable students to increase their communicative competence in Arabic. It focuses on the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with more focus on Speaking and Reading. Students will read and discuss authentic Arabic materiel such as articles from daily newspapers/ magazines, and other texts related to the religion, politics, culture, and economics of North Africa and the Middle East.

Students are also required to read or listen to the news media and discuss current political issues in a debate format, as well as to give oral presentations in Arabic. They are expected to express their ideas both orally and in writing

Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya Book 1

Learning outcomes: 

By the end of the course, each student  will be able to:

  • express herself/himself in the target language using more complex grammatical structures and a wider range of Arabic expressions.
  • read and understand authentic material written in Arabic.
  • listen to and understand authentic spoken Arabic.
  • discuss current themes related to the Arab World.
  • give a short presentation related to the topics covered in the course
Method of presentation: 

The student is expected to do all homework outside of class. In-class activities will integrate the four basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher will facilitate and encourage individual, pair and group work in class.

Field study: 

Two field study trips are organized to two different places in Rabat. Students will have the opportunity to use the language outside the classroom setting and meet other people and practice their speaking skill.

Week 4: First field trip to the archeological museum.

Week 10: Second field trip to Shalla site.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Weekly quizzes and writing assignments, presentations, class participation, homework, midterm exam, and final exam.

Brief Biography of Instructor: 

Mohammed Yacine holds a B.A. in English literature and linguistics, a diploma as a qualified teacher, a diploma of supervisor of English (from Moroccan universities and institutions), and an ACTES (Advanced certificate in Teacher Education and Supervision) from Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh, Scotland. Has been teaching English and Arabic for  many years and  worked as a supervisor for twelve years. He is co-author of several official and private school textbooks.

Fields of interest: Textbook writing , cross-culture studies, and translation (Arabic, French and English).
