Description: 

This course introduces students to the sounds and letters of the Arabic language and enables her/him to speak Modern Standard Arabic by asking and answering simple WH questions.

Students learn to write simple paragraphs introducing herself/himself in writing and express opinions about weather conditions and her/his life in Morocco using simple Arabic expressions. Modern Standard Arabic can be used and understood all over the Arab world (Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, etc).

Learning outcomes: 

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand deep sounds versus frontal sounds, long vowels versus short vowels through listening and dictations;
  • Understand Arabic lexical items and expressions and gender agreement relationships;
  • Write simple sentences about her/his daily life in Morocco;
  • Write short paragraphs about daily activities;
  • Read paragraphs in Arabic;
  • Listen and understand short passages in Arabic;
  • Browse through an Arabic magazine or newspaper;
  • Communicate in simple Arabic through skill integration of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Method of presentation: 

An eclectic approach is adopted with focus on the communicative.  Emphasis is on actively engaging the student in meaningful interaction in class. Pair and group work is encouraged during all class activities. Students practice course material through situational dialogues related to Moroccan and Arab culture, simple culturally loaded texts, videos, songs, games, and simplified short stories.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Class participation (10%); Oral presentation and mini research projects (10%); Weekly quizzes and writing (20%); Homework (20%); Midterm exam (20%); Final exam (20%).

Brief Biography of Instructor: 

Salaheddine Abbadi earned a BA degree in English from the University of Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, Fes in 1986. He joined a teacher training college in1987. Currently teacher of English in Rabat, where since 1988 he has taught English as a foreign language.  He pursued post graduate Studies in comparative linguistics in Rabat. Current research areas focus on comparing the morphological and syntactic features of English and Arabic.
