Description: 

This course examines contemporary Andean literature. Students will read and discuss essays and novels by representative contemporary authors to learn about historical events and analyze how these texts are built.

Method of presentation: 

Discussion, class workshops, student presentations.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Class participation (10%); oral presentation (10%); class workshops (5%); reading comprehension exercises (in-class or homework) (5%); four one- to three-page essays (40%); mid-term exam (15%); final exam (15%).

Each student will choose one author and theme for a 10-minute oral presentation. Class workshops are
30-minute group exercises in which students analyze fragments of text and answer questions posed by the instructor.

1. Introduction to twentieth century Latin American literature and how it relates to contemporary Latin American Literature. Stepping into modernity: The Boom’s literary antecedents and social meanings.  Pros and cons.

3. Perú. The sentimental novel: a playful approach. Gays and the Peruvian upper class.

4. Ecuador. Sex and virtual reality. Utopian political failures. Death in Quito, an Andean city.

5. Bolivia. Neoliberalism and globalization. Guerrilas and Religion.

6. Conclusions. Issues in post-Boom contemporary Latin American Literature: the failure of utopian social goals; unique but meaningful love stories; a seemingly less demanding writing style that is easier to read.
