Evolution of theatrical creation in France from the classical era (17th c.) to the 20th century through the study of four plays (one per century):
Molière, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, comédie-ballet (1670)
Marivaux, Le jeu de l’amour et du hazard (1730)
Eugène Labiche, Un chapeau de paille d’Italie (1851)
Eugène Ionesco, Rhinocéros (1960)
Prerequisites:
Students are required to read the aforementioned texts before coming to class.
Method of presentation:
Lecture and discussion; commentary and analysis, student presentation, videos, excursions to local performances.
Required work and form of assessment:
Regular attendance, thorough reading of works outside of class and active participation in class (10%); research paper (25%); mid-term (25%); final exam (40%).
