Description:

The purpose of the course is to provide a methodology for analyzing poetic texts. It explores the concept of modernity in the French poetry at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, through four authors (Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du Mal; Verlaine, Les poèmes saturniens; Cendrars, Du monde entier (1912-19); Apollinaire, Alcools).

The study of each collection lasts about four weeks. It consists of a general introduction to the poet and the collection; the study of a theoretical text of the poet; the study of specific poems.

For each class students are asked to have attentively read the texts (to have looked up difficult words in the dictionary) and to have prepared an explanation for the poems.
