Individual Performance Studies is dedicated to a hands-on approach to the performance of music under the supervision of professional Milanese musicians. The number of credits awarded is determined by the number of contact hours with the personal instructor, number of hours of private practice, and the preparation of a private solo recital according to the following criteria:
 
 
MS391 for three credits (not available for Summer program):

  • 12 hours of private instruction
  • 75 or more hours of independent practice
  • preparation and presentation of five pieces from the Operatic and/or Italian Art song repertoire
  • the student must present all of the above in hearing before their teacher and at least one member of the IES music faculty a few in advance of the concert; only upon a successful
  • hearing can the concert take place and a third credit be granted for the course
  • the total performance time of the recital will be at least 20 minutes
  • the performer will play the whole program by heart
  • the student must prepare a printed program for the recital for those in attendance
  • an audio (and, if possible, also a video) recording will be made of the performances
  • the student’s private instructor and a member of the IES music department must attend and evaluate the recital; this evaluation constitutes one component (50%) of the final grade.

 
For each private lesson, students are expected to complete at least 7 hours of independent practice. Students enrolled in Individual Vocal Studies may not use private instruction or hours of preparation that are required as a part of the Music Performance Workshop in order to receive credit for this course.
 

Prerequisites: 

An audition may be necessary to determine the appropriate level of instruction.

Learning outcomes: 

 

By the end of the course, the student will:

  • be able to demonstrate improvement in performance ability and knowledge of the instrument
  • develop specific musical skills, including stylistic interpretative abilities and practice techniques
  • expand repertoire
  • acquire the practical skills necessary for giving a recital: scheduling, organization, setting up and running recording equipment, writing a concert program, preparing and presenting publicly
  • acquire staging skills, acting, posture also through the observation of both live and videos of professional performers, as will be assigned on a case-by-case basis.

 

Method of presentation: 

Personal instruction, field study (attending recitals/opera at la Scala and/or other Milanese theaters).

Required work and form of assessment: 

Students must arrange for private instruction schedule at their own initiative. The instructor will complete a written evaluation form that provides an assessment of the student’s musicianship, preparation, progress, and any other relevant issues. The student is responsible for ensuring that this written evaluation is turned into the Registrar’s Office at the IES Abroad Center before the end of the semester.

Brief Biography of Instructor: 

 

Italian soprano, Patrizia Zanardi has performed in theatres throughout Italy, Europe, USA and Japan. She has performed leading roles with the Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro Verdi Trieste, Teatro Regio Parma, Teatro Romolo Valli Reggio Emilia, Teatro Municipale Piacenza, Teatro Donizetti Bergamo, Teatro Ponchielli Cremona, Teatro Grande Brescia, Teatro Sociale Como, Teatro Fraschini Pavia, Teatro Pergolesi Jesi, Festival della Valle d’Itria Martina Franca, Teatro Greco Romano Taormina, Teatro Cervantes Malaga, New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, Théatre La Monnaie Bruxelles, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, NHK Hall Tokyo among many others.Her repertoire encompasses many of the roles of Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini, including Violetta in La Traviata, Gilda in Rigoletto, Amalia in I Masnadieri, Luisa in Luisa Miller, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Mimì in La Boheme, Liù in Turandot, Micaela in Carmen, Manon in Massenet’s  Manon.
On the concert stage, Ms. Zanardi has performed many times with Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI of Torino among others.In addition to her recordings for the Bongiovanni record label, Ms. Zanardi has also recorded for Clarius Audi, Bottega Discantica and she was featured in the documentary Renata Scotto: L’Ile Opéra, which was broadcast throughout Europe.Ms. Zanardi received her singing Diploma from the Conservatorio G. Verdi of Torino cum lauda.  She also received a Master of Art Degree on Verdi’s repertoire cum lauda and a Master of Art Degree above German, French, Spanish and Italian Art songs repertoire, cum lauda, from the Conservatorio G Nicolini of Piacenza.She has partecipated with the Accademia Rossiniana Pesaro, Accademia Nazionale S. Cecilia Roma, Renata Scotto Opera Accademy Savona and Fondazione Verdi Festival Parma. She began her musical training early, playing the violin and piano as well as studying ballet.
