Description: 

This course introduces students to Madrd as a multi-faceted reality, focusing on such topics as: history, art, literature, culture, etc.  The knowledge of Madrid reality can be used to understand Spanish culture as a whole.  Students will conduct field work: tours, visits to monestaries, churches, museums, theaters, etc.

Method of presentation: 

Lecture and discussion; slide presentations; visits to museums, historical sites, and monuments of special interest.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Mandatory attendance to class visits, field work (50%). Final exam (40%). Class participation (10%).

content: 

1.-  From Madrid and its Muslim origins until the establishment of the Court in 1561.  Austrian rule.

2.-  Literary Madrid of the Golden Age: The Parnaso Neighborhood.

3.-  The Bourbon Dynasty and its works in the city during the 18th Century.

4.- 19th Century Madrid, capital of the liberal state, headquarters of political and cultural institutions.

5.-  Culture and Leisure spaces.

6.- Urban reforms of the 20th Century: Gran Vía and the amplification of la Castellana
