Description: 

A study of the life and works of the most important painters represented in the Prado Museum. Spanish painters such as el Greco, Ribera, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya will be examined, as well as painters from other countries such as Rubens, Bosco, and Tiziano whose oeuvre is well-represented in the Prado.  Additional visits will be made to San Antonio de la Florida, Casón Buen Retiro, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and Museo Sorolla.

Method of presentation: 

Lectures and Museum visits.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Final exam (40%); essay on a single painting or painter (35%); class attendance (including museum visits) and participation (25%).

content: 

1.  Lectures will address the following topics:   the concept of a museum represented by El Prado; different painting techniques; the artistic vision, aesthetic, and historical context of each painter; methods of analyzing a composition by light, perspective, color, theme, etc.
2.  The following artists and their works are studied in depth: El Greco, Ribera, Velazquez, Zurbaran, Murillo, Goya, Murilla, Rubens, Pintura Flamenca/Menling, Bosco, Impressionism.
