Description: 

Survey of Spanish painting and representative artists from the Renaissance to the present. Topics include impact of historical events on artists, their relationship with the chuch, social and political issues and major characteristics of the artists’ works.

Prerequisites: 

None

Method of presentation: 

Lecture and discussion; slide presentations; site visits to the Prado and relevant places.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Course grade based on attendance and active class participation (10%); mid-term (40%); short paper (10%) and final exam (40%).

content: 

I. Introduction: Historical overview.
II. Painting techniques, composition and forms of representation which characterize the works of each of the following artists from the Renaissance to the 2oth century:
a. El Greco: Italian influences and his life in Toledo.
b. Ribero and “el tenebrismo”
c. Andalusia school: Murilo and Zurbarán
d. Velázquez: portraits, mythological paintings, master works
e. Goya and his times: tapestries, royal portraits, war paintings, original paintings
f. Nineteenth century painting
g. Twentieth century painters: Picasso and cubism; Dalí and surrealism; Miró and abstract art
h. Recent movements: Grupo de Cuenca, Equipo Crónica, etc.
III. Site visits: the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, Reina Sofía, Sorolla, Academy of Fine Arts, San Antonio de la Florida, Casón del Buen Retiro
