Description: 

The course seeks to compare Spanish and Latin American women’s literature.  The course will focus on narrative style as well as on the importance of these novels in terms of their historical context.

Method of presentation: 

In a series of lectures, the professor will provide a theoretical framework for the analysis of Latin American and Spanish women’s literature. Works will then be discussed in class with special emphasis placed on the historical context of each. Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions. They will also be required to write commentaries about the texts covered and a brief essay which relates to one of the themes discussed during the semester.

Written assignments and class participation: 20%; Mid-term exam: 25%; Final exam: 25%; Paper: 30%

content: 

1.  Historical introduction: Spain and Latin America in the 20th century.
2.  Main literary trends. The novel.
3.  Development of Latin American feminine writing. Principal authors.
4.  Development of feminine writing in Spain.  Main writers.
5.  The short story. Comparison of the most representative authors.
6.  Analysis of four significant novels.
