Analysis of the major characteristics of Spain’s economy from different perspectives: macroeconomics, structural, sectoral, and historical, with an emphasis on Spain’s current economy and its role in the European Economic Community.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of macroeconomics and economic history.
Method of presentation:
Lecture and discussion.
Required work and form of assessment:
Regular class attendance; two exams based on required readings; short oral presentations on a chosen topic. Final course grade based on presentation, exams, class participation and possible extra-credit project.

Part I: Introduction to the industrialization of the Spanish economy during the 1960’s and the consequences of the international economic crisis of the 1970’s.
Part II: Analysis of collective macroeconomic principles, e.g., products and income, consumption, investment ;
analysis of Spain’s agriculture, industry, financial system, business; economic relations with other countries.
Part III: Political economy and the social and regional distribution of economic activity.

2. The economic crisis of the 1970’s.
3. The evolution of macroeconomics during the 1980’s: production and income, consumption and investment.
4. The agricultural sector.
5. The industrial sector.
6. Financial services and other tertiary activities.
7. Economic activity related to the administration of the public sector.
8. Foreign economic relations.
9. The political economy: monetary, fiscal and others.
10. Regional dynamics and the Spanish economy.
11. Distribution of income.
12. Labor policy and the work force.
13. Membership in the European Community.
14. The present state of the Spanish economy within the EEC.
