Description: 

Survey of 20th century Spanish painters, with an emphasis on Picasso, Dalí and Miró.

Method of presentation: 

Lecture and discussion; slide presentations; field trips to museums.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Final course grade based on two exams during the semester; a paper on a work of art on exhibit in Madrid; and attendance and active class participation.

2.  Change of Century. From Modernism to Solana.
3. Picasso’s revolutionary art and the academic tradition. Picasso’s blue and pink periods.
4. Picasso’s revolutionary art II: “Las señoritas de Avignon”
5. Picasso’s revolutionary art III: The evolution of cubism.
6. Picasso: A return to classicism.
7. Other cubist painters: Juan Gris.
8. Surrealist art: Miró’s early works.
9. Miró: Mature works
10. Dalí: The early years
11. Dalí’s “paranoid-critical” method
12. El Guernica
13. Master painters of the postwar period: Picaso, Miró and Dalí
14. Postwar art: The modernization of Spanish painting and groups “Dau al set”, “El Paso” and “Equipo 57”.
15. From postwar pop art to postmodern op art.
