Description: 

Reading and analysis of Federico García Lorca’s poetry, with a particular emphasis on the internal logic of the poems, as well as their historical and cultural context. Includes guided visits and literary Concha García-Badía Fragawalks.

Prerequisites: 

Advanced level Spanish; one course in Spanish literature.

Method of presentation: 

Two 90-minute classes weekly, in addition to the visits and literary walks. Lectures by the instructor; student presentations based on required essay; guided visits and literary itineraries; class discussion. Sharing of materials and personal work.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Active class participation (20%); oral presentation based on essay (15%); personal journal (25%); group project: develop a FGL poetry anthology and write individual paper on anthology (20%); final examination (20%).

TRADITION AND AVANT-GARDE: Bourgeois modernity and artistic modernity in early 20th century Spain.

LORCA´S GRANADA, 2: Visits to the museum and birth place of FGL in Fuente Vaqueros and his childhood residence in Valderrubio.

AVANT-GARDE, SURREALISM, COMPROMISE, 1: F.G.L. and young literature of the 1920s. The generation of 1927 from the perspective of José Ortega y Gasset’s La deshumanización del arte.

NEOPOPULARISM AND PURE POETRY: Reading, textual analysis and discussion of Libro de poemas, Canciones, Romancero gitano, Poema del cante jondo and Primeras canciones.

THE RESIDENCIA DE ESTUDIANTES: The Residencia de Estudiantes as a key environment for Lorca’s connection with the group of the Generation de 1927, and other artists such as Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel. Possible visit to the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid.

AVANT-GARDE, SURREALISM, COMPROMISE, 2: New York, Cuba, and return to Spain. The crisis of 1929 and the new surrealist creed.

THE SURREALIST REVOLUTION: Reading, textual analysis and discussion of Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías and Poeta en Nueva York (México, 1940).

AVANT-GARDE, SURREALISM, COMPROMISE, 3: Love and death, or compromise with the writing life and the endless struggle with words.

THE LOVE OF TRUE WORDS AND THE TWO DEATHS: Reading, textual analysis and discussion of Diván del Tamarit and Sonetos del amor oscuro.

LORCA´S GRANADA, 3: Walk to the Barranco de Víznar, site of Lorca´s assassination.

Brief Biography of Instructor: 

Concha García-Badía holds a Bachelor´s in Spanish, a Master´s in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language, and a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature, all from the University of Granada. Professor García-Badía has published literary reviews, articles and interviews in several journals, magazines, and newspapers. She is the author of Siervos con sangre diferente: Relectura de la modernidad a través de la obra de Luis García Montero. Furthermore, she has been awarded various prizes for short stories and her fiction has been published in literary magazines and anthologies.
