Description: 

A study of the media and the role the media play in modern society, in particular the impact on the political process. Emphasis on the German media with reference and comparison to European and American media. Includes guest lectures by representatives of media and government and/or site visit to local newspaper publishing house.

Method of presentation: 

Lectures, discussions, guest lectures, site visits, round table discussions, film viewings

Required work and form of assessment: 

Class participation (20%), oral presentation (20%) term paper (20%), mid-term (20%) and final exam (20%).

Assignments include: TV news comparison of style, presentation, persuasive power, trustworthiness, infotainment (ARD, ZDF, SAT 1, RTL, Pro 7, Vox; comparison to USA: ABC, NBC, CBS; comparison to international: BBC World News, CNN World News); Print media comparison of style, presentation, persuasive power, trustworthiness, political orientation, and target group (FAZ, SZ, Die Welt, taz, Badische Zeitung, Bild, Der Spiegel, Focus.

Brief Biography of Instructor: 

Ulrich Eckelt earned a M.A. in German and Geography from the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. From 1985-93, Mr. Eckelt taught at a private school in Switzerland. In 1993, he began further training as an expert EU consultant. Since 1996, he has held a post at the University of Freiburg as a SOCRATES representative responsible for the EU higher education and vocational programs ERASMUS and LEONARDO.
