The course provides an overview of the history of 20th century Spain. Classes are organized in two sections. The second section covers the period 1936-present, with particular attention to the following topics:

  • The Spanish Civil War
  • Franco’s dictatorship
  • Basque, Catalan and Spanish nationalisms
  • The relations between the United States and Spain
Attendance policy:

Attendance is mandatory for all IES classes, including field studies. Any exams, tests, presentations, or other work missed due to student absences can only be rescheduled in cases of documented medical or family emergencies. If a student misses more than three classes in any course half a letter grade will be deducted from the final grade for every additional absence. Seven absences in any course will result in a failing grade.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, the students  should be able to:

  • acquire a basic knowledge of the political evolution of Spain from the 19th century to the present day;
  • identify the main social groups, political parties and historical figures of contemporary Spain;
  • analyze the relations between the governments of United States and Spain in the 20th century;
  • criticize and evaluate the research papers of their classmates.
Method of presentation:

Students will acquire the knowledge and the skills of this course through the following means:

  • Homework, which includes reading the reader’s articles and other materials, writing critiques of other students’ papers and presenting a number of topics in class.
  • Lectures in which the instructor will provide the basic information of every topic. They will be a complement to the course readings.
  • Research paper.
  • Class discussions on the readings.
  • Four instructor-guided town visits.
Required work and form of assessment:

The final grade will be determined as follows:

  • Participation (30% of the final grade). This includes both participation in class discussions and all kinds of homework.
  • Research paper of 1500 words (30% of the final grade), about a topic related to the Spanish Civil War.
  • Oral presentation of the research paper (5%). This consists of giving a short talk and answering the questions asked by the classmates.
  • Midterm exam, which covers sessions 1 to 9 (15%). Both this exam and the final exam consist of a number of a series of short questions (5-10 lines).
  • Final exam, which covers sessions 11 to 24 (20%).

Also, during the course the instructor will regularly give feedback to the students about their learning process. This will be done in the classroom, either orally or through comments written in their short assignments and exams.
