IES Abroad is pleased to announce the publication of the IES Abroad MAP for Language and Intercultural Communication, a ground-breaking work that will significantly change the way that language is taught in study abroad programs.

For the first time, language learning in a study abroad program will integrate what students learn in a language classroom with what students experience outside the classroom, as they immerse themselves in the environment of their programs.

At the Annual Conference in Chicago, IES Abroad presented leadership awards to three study abroad professionals and welcomed three new members to its academic consortium.

IES Abroad and Chicago Scholars, which helps high-achieving high school students overcome the barriers to their collegiate access and success, announced the creation of a major new initiative to increase the number of disadvantaged students from the Chicago area participating in college study abroad programs. Both organizations are dedicated to providing higher education opportunities to traditionally underrepresented students, defined as racial/ethnic minorities, financially needy students, first generation, or those having a history of overcoming adversity.

According to the 2011 IES Abroad Membership Survey Report, third-party study abroad provider programs are far more efficient for higher education institutions to manage than exchange programs. That is just one of the many findings resulting from IES Abroad’s annual survey of nearly 200 top-tier public and private American colleges and universities that comprise the IES Abroad Academic Consortium.

On September 9, Gary Locke, the new U.S. Ambassador to China, gave his first public speech in China at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). Eight IES Abroad Beijing students and IES Abroad Beijing Center Director, Brian Eyler, had the extraordinary opportunity to attend. This year, BFSU is celebrating its 70th anniversary and the Ambassador's talk kicks-off a series of events taking place this fall to celebrate.

We are delighted to announce that 34 students have been selected to blog for us this fall at blogs.IESabroad.org.

These students, representing IES Abroad programs around the world, will share their thoughts before departure, their lives during the program, and their feelings and experiences once they return home. More than 100,000 visitors have followed the study abroad experiences of IES Abroad bloggers since we launched the site in August 2008.
