The U.S. State Department issued a Travel Alert today, urging Americans traveling in and to Europe to be vigilant about possible terrorist attacks. A travel alert urges extra caution during a specific time. As opposed to a travel warning, a travel alert does not discourage Americans from visiting Europe or suggest that they return home.

Today's travel alert was issued in the wake of media reports in Europe throughout the last week of possible terrorist plots aimed at possible targets in Great Britain, France and Germany.

We are pleased to report that the return to normalcy communicated yesterday continues, both within Quito and Ecuador.  The police are returning to work, the airport continues to be open, and roads previously closed have been opened.  An updated message from the U.S. Embassy in Quito can be found here http://ecuador.usembassy.gov/service.html.

Gianni Ponti, IES Abroad Rome Professor, will appear on an upcoming television documentary, “How Nero Saved Rome,” airing on The National Geographic Channel on Monday, September 20 at 8:00 PM (CST).

 A 7+ magnitude earthquake struck today off New Zealand's South Island at 10:35 a.m. CST. The epicenter of the quake was approximately 20 miles northwest of Christchurch.

According to the 2010 IES Abroad Membership Survey Report, study abroad enrollment for students at U.S. colleges and universities is projected to increase six percent in 2010-2011 over 2009-2010 numbers. That is just one of the many findings resulting from IES Abroad’s annual survey of the 185 top-tier public and private American colleges and universities that comprise the IES Abroad Academic Consortium.

We at IES Abroad were saddened this week to learn of the passing of our longtime friend, Fr. Paul Locatelli, the chancellor and former president of Santa Clara University. Santa Clara was the first member of the IES Abroad Consortium over 45 years ago, and during his two decades as president of the university Paul was a great supporter of students studying abroad. He served as a board member here at IES Abroad from 1995 to 2001, and was instrumental in establishing a new center in Dublin.
