Each year, IES Abroad sponsors one or more trips to familiarize Member and Associate Member coordinators, administrators, and faculty members with our study abroad programs. Study abroad coordinators have the opportunity to nominate themselves or their colleagues to participate in these trips. IES Abroad covers the majority of the associated costs, with participants making only a small financial contribution. Trips include the cost of travel to the host city, accommodations, most meals, group activities, and all local transportation.

IES Abroad Rio De Janeiro Brazil November 10-16, 2013
IES abroad invites study abroad staff and college/university faculty to participate in a familiarization visit to Rio in November 2013. Participants will gain a rounded impression of IES Abroad’s program in Rio.
Activities on this trip include:
Visiting the IES Center and our university partners
Visits to sites for internships and service learning
Observation of classes
Visits to student housing
Special field trip to historic Petropolis.

IES Abroad Istanbul Turkey May 4-10, 2014
IES Abroad invites study abroad staff and college/university faculty to participate in a familiarization visit to Istanbul in May 2014. The group will learn on site about our three Istanbul programs, the IES Abroad Middle Eastern Studies program, and the Bogazici and Sabanci direct enrollment programs. Participants will gain a rounded impression of IES Abroad’s program in Istanbul.
Activities on this trip include:
Visit our partner universities and the IES Abroad Center
Visits to sites for internships and service learning
Observation of classes
Visits to student housing
Field trip to historic Ephesus.

IES Abroad Kunming China March 9-16, 2014
IES Abroad invites study abroad staff and college/university faculty to participate in a familiarization visit to Kunming in March 2014. The group will learn on site about our summer and semester programs in Kunming, including a “mini-field study” trip to nearby Chiang Mai, Thailand. Participants will gain a rounded impression of IES Abroad’s program in Kunming and the importance of China & Southeast Asian relations.
Activities on this trip include:
Visiting the IES Abroad Center and our university partner
Service Learning observation
Area studies & Chinese language class participation
Visits to student housing, both residence hall and homestay
Special overnight field trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand, including a visit to an elephant sanctuary

Nomination and Selection Process
To apply for a familiarization trip, please email the following materials to AcademicPrograms@IESabroad.org. A selection committee will meet to review applications and choose participants. Each institution may submit one nomination only. The nomination deadline for events in the Summer and Fall is July 15, 2013, and the deadline for events in Winter and Spring is November 15, 2013.
