Overview

If there’s any mention about best cities to live in, chances are Melbourne is high on the list. The climate is perfect for outdoor activity year round. Melbourne’s parks and gardens—like the Royal Botanic Gardens—are bountiful. These Aussies are wild about sports, from Australia Rules football to rowing. They’re also proud of their city, and it shows with the number of festivals and parades they have each year. But don’t take our word for it—come see for yourself.

Culture

Known for its rich cultural life, passion for sports, fashion scene, café-lined streets, beautiful parks, and funky Victorian neighborhoods, Melbourne has been dubbed the “World’s Most Livable City.”

As the capital of Victoria and Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne is home to more than four million people of more than 140 different nationalities. Large Italian, Vietnamese, Greek, and Chinese communities contribute to the city’s well-deserved reputation for a wonderful and diverse culinary culture. Trams bustle along the streets—an extensive and easy-to-navigate system will take you throughout the city, from museums to sports grounds, from the beach to designer boutiques, in less than an hour.

Melbourne is not just about the city centre either. There are many varied pockets of Melbourne, such as St. Kilda, home to a lively music and café scene and Luna Park theme park; Carlton, the Italian section of the city which boasts countless pizza, pasta, espresso, and gelato options; Prahran and South Yarra, the shopping havens filled with independent designer stores and off-beat streetwear; and Fitzroy, home of Melbourne’s bohemian culture. Each area has its own distinct cultural flavor you will want to explore while studying in Melbourne.

Destinations

Queen Victoria's Market [1]

Since 1878, the Queen Victoria Market has been the place to buy and sell. At any hour, the Market guarantees excitement. Produce is the market's specialty, but visitors can also purchase other goods such as apparel and souvenirs. Perhaps the most fun part about the market is that bargaining is expected!

"The Queen Victoria Market has everything you could ever want and is such a great place to go on the weekends." -Sara A., Bucknell University

Botanic Gardens [2]

An entire day can be devoted to the Botanic Gardens. More than 15,000 different plant and flower species fill the gardens, some of which are endangered. There are different "walks" that allow visitors to explore certain areas of the Gardens. On the Chocolate & Spice Walk, for example, visitors see different plants devoted to chocolate production. Chocolate samples are included!

St. Kilda [3]

St. Kilda exudes fun and will surely bring out the child in you. Located right on the beach, St. Kilda has numerous activities that attract locals and tourists alike. Visitors can shop and dine while they enjoy street entertainers, music, and shows. Luna Park, the theme park located in the Lower Esplanade, offers thrilling roller coasters and other amusement park rides.

Eureka Tower [4]

This 975 foot skyscraper is located in the Southbank precinct of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Completed in 2006, it was named after the Eureka Stockade, a rebellion during the Victorian gold rush in 1854. The design reflects that period, displaying a gold crown to embody the gold rush and a red stripe to represent the blood spilt during the revolt. The blue and white features of the outside of the building represent the flag.
