This course if for students that already have a good knowledge of the Spanish language but who need to broaden their vocabulary and understand more complex grammatical constructions, as well as expanding sociocultural knowledge. The idea is to develop communicative competence using all skills in the appropriate setting.
Method of presentation:
Lexicon and grammar functions will be worked on with respect to each communicative act; they will be put into practice with various text exercises as well as authentic materials. Students will read texts in class and as homework that they will analyze, debate, and look at from a multicultural point of view, contrasting Spanish culture with their own.
Required work and form of assessment:
Participation and homework (20%); Quizzes (30%); Midterm (30%); Final exam (30%).

1. Uses of Ser and Estar
Ser and Estar with adjectives: uses, subtle changes, meaning changes, construction of passive with ser or estar, impersonal expressions
2. Past: Uses and contrasts of the for verb tenses in the past
3. Simple and compound future: Uses, simple and compound conditionals, uses and temporal correlations with future and conditional.
4. Pronouns. Direct and Indirect compliments. Verbs that change meaning. Unstressed pronouns.
Possessive pronouns.
5. Indicative and subjunctive in simple clauses: expressions of doubt and probability. Expression of desire.
6. Indicative and subjunctive in relative clauses. Reduplicative sentences; emphatic sentences. Unknown relatives.
7. Indicative and subjunctive in noun clauses: verbs of feeling, desire or influence, verbs or communication or perception. Expressions with ser, estar and parecer.
8. Indicative and subjunctive in temporal clauses: temporal connectors.
9. Indicative and subjunctive in final clauses: final connectors.
10. Indicative and subjunctive in concessive clauses: concessive connectors.
11. Indicative and subjunctive in conditional clauses: conditional clauses.
12. Indicative and subjunctive in causal clauses: causal connectors.
13. Indicative and subjunctive in consecutive clauses: consecutive connectors.
14. Indicative and subjunctive in modal clauses: modal connectors.
15. Indirect style: transformations when the principal verb is in the past. Verbs that summarize attitudes and speech acts, introductory verbs for indirect style.
