Salamanca’s fame lies in the prestige of its university and the graceful architecture of the Plaza Mayor and surrounding neighborhoods. The Universidad de Salamanca, the oldest university in Spain and one of the most prestigious in Europe, opened in 1218. Tradition and history permeate the city, where construction on its “new” Cathedral began in the 1500s.

In this full-immersion program, classes are offered by Cursos Internacionales of Universidad de Salamanca, one of the preeminent centers in the teaching of Spanish in the world. Each four-week program is equal to an entire semester
of Spanish language study. You are able to participate in both program sessions to create an eight-week study abroad experience.

Program Dates

These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences.

Courses are taught in Spanish. You enroll in a 3-credit Spanish language course that includes an informal conversation component, and a 1-credit elective course. If you are at the beginning Spanish level, you enroll in a required vocabulary course as your elective. All other students choose an elective. Past electives have included:

  • Contemporary Spanish History
  • Cinema, Press, and Television in Spain
  • Spanish and Spanish American Literature
  • Spanish Art
  • The Arab World in Spanish Culture
  • The Role of Women in Spanish History

Spanish Language Courses
Spanish Language classes enroll approximately 12 students per class, and the conversation portions of the course enroll approximately eight students per class - ratios that guarantee that you receive individual attention from your instructors. Please note that Spanish Language course level will be determined by a placement exam administered during orientation in Salamanca.

Courses
Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Salamanca, it will feel like home.

Homestays – Live with families or señoras in Spanish homes throughout Salamanca. Three meals are provided each day.

Residence Halls – Live in singles with private bathrooms and a shared kitchenette. Seven meals are provided per week.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Salamanca is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, house that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

The program begins with on-site orientation that introduces you to the IES Abroad Salamanca staff, your fellow students, and the city of Salamanca. Topics such as academics, housing, transportation, and health and safety are covered during this time.

You also take walking tours of the city, participate in a scavenger hunt, and take a salsa and flamenco dance lesson during your orientation.

Field Trips

You have the opportunity to participate in field trips through IES Abroad and through the University of Salamanca.

  • IES Abroad Field Trip – One field trip is included in the program. Session I students visit Portugal, and Session II students take a trip to Cantabria.
  • University Field Trips – You can participate in optional, unsubsidized, day trips to sites such as Madrid, Toledo, and Segovia. Three-day trips to Barcelona and Granada are sponsored by the University.
