2-3 semesters of French (Intermediate)

This program provides you with an outstanding opportunity to learn about French culture and history while improving your French language abilities--all while studying in one of the most famous cities in the world.

You earn 6 credits through an intensive intermediate French language course. The course is taught in French by native French speakers, and incorporates field study in Paris, including visits to art museums, and its architectural and historical landmarks.

Program Dates

These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the highest quality academic and cultural experience abroad possible.

Course options are determined by language proficiency. Intermediate students (2-3 semesters of college-level French) enroll in FR251: Intensive French Language and Culture, a 6-credit course that equals an entire year of university-level second year French and incorporates a wealth of field study activities.

Courses

This is a list of planned course offerings. After you are accepted, you will see a list of final course offerings in your MyIESabroad account.

Field Study

To supplement coursework, the IES Abroad Paris Intermediate & Advanced Language Summer Program includes field study to many sites of historic and contemporary interest in Paris. Destinations may include:

  • Ile-Saint-Louis
  • The Senate
  • Musée d'Orsay

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Paris, it will feel like home.

Homestays – You stay in a French home in the city of Paris or its surrounding banlieues (suburbs). You eat breakfast daily and three evening meals per week with your host(s). Other meals are available at university cafeterias and inexpensive restaurants. You have the option to request a typical homestay placement, or a placement in a chambre de bonne.

Apartments – A limited number of apartments are available for an additional fee. Internet access is available via Ethernet cable. Rooms are single studios, and each apartment has a private bathroom and small kitchenette. An IES Abroad Resident Assistant lives on-site. Meals are not included.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Paris is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

After you arrive in Paris, you participate in a two-day orientation period that includes cultural activities, such as guided tours of Paris neighborhoods and a welcome dinner cruise on the Seine.  Sessions are conducted by IES Abroad staff and faculty and introduce you to various aspects of life in France and provide practical information on housing, transportation, and extracurricular activities.

Extracurricular Activities & Cultural Events

During your summer in Paris there will be plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture. Some past IES Abroad events have included ballets at the opera, theater performances at local theaters, visits to open air markets, a wine tasting, museum visits, neighborhood tours, picnics in local parks, and a conversation club with French students.

Field Trips

IES Abroad sponsored field trips are included in the program fee. Past field trips include:

  • Giverny- You spend one day touring Monet's gardens, made famous by his water lily paintings.
  • Reims – Visit the Cathédrale Notre Dame and enjoy a champagne tasting at Champagne Pommery.
